Overhead Double Circuit Reconductor

Reconductoring 3,300 feet of energized 3-phase distribution line through a dense urban environment is a demanding task under any conditions. Doing it during a summer heat wave with temperatures hitting 100°F, while keeping the lights on for every customer along the way, required a level of planning and crew execution that doesn’t leave room for error.

The scope was extensive: upgrading conductors from 336 to 556 kcmil, bringing the neutral up to match, replacing 15 poles ranging from 35 to 55 feet, many sitting in congested sidewalks, and working across 35 total poles with full hardware replacements including arms, anchors, and guy wires. Station work added another layer, with two poles replaced, switches upgraded from 600-amp to 900-amp, and two station exits reconductored and tied directly to station steel.

All of the work was performed while the lines were energized, with no unintentional outages. The project wrapped safely, to specification, and ahead of schedule. Along the way, crews made enough of an impression on the surrounding community, and the utility provider, that the compliments kept coming long after the work was done.
